Hij is sinds zijn jeugd achtervolgd door pech en gedoemd te mislukken. De film bestaat uit zes perioden, die spelen voor, tijdens en na de oorlog. Munk wordt veelal beschouwd als de tegenhanger van Andrzej Wajda: een ironisch-rationaliserende stijl met een sceptische en kritische houding tegenover `zijn` hoofdpersonen. Helaas is hij te vroeg gestorven (1961). 'De held' Kobiela was één der bekendste Poolse komieken.
