Walt DisneyIn 1966, the year Walt Disney died, 240 million people saw a Disney movie, 100 million tuned in to a Disney television program, 80 million bought Disney merchandise, and close to seven million visited Disneyland. Few creative figures before or since have held such a long-lasting place in American life and popular culture.American Experience offers an unprecedented look at the life and legacy of one of America’s most enduring and influential storytellers in Walt Disney, a new two-part, four-hour film premiering Monday and Tuesday, Sep. 14-15 from 8-10 p.m. The film examines Disney’s complex life and enduring legacy, featuring rare archival footage from the Disney vaults, scenes from some of his greatest films, and interviews with biogra-phers, animators and artists who worked on early films, including Snow White, and the designers who helped turn his dream of Disneyland into reality.
Disney’s movies grew out of his own life experiences. He told stories of outsiders struggling for acceptance and belonging, while questioning the conventions of class and authority. As Disney rose to prominence and gained financial security, his work became increasingly celebratory of the American way of life that made his unlikely success possible.
Yet despite that success, he was driven and restless, a demanding perfectionist on whom decades of relentless work and chain-smoking would take their toll. Never satisfied with his previous efforts, he always pushed forward to a new adventure, but his attention to detail and quest for innovation frequently meant delays and cost overruns. When his employees organized and went on strike, Disney felt betrayed, unable to understand how people who worked for him could be unhappy; years later he called them communists before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
“Oftentimes, the character at the center of Disney’s work is an outsider, an underdog of sorts, who is trying in a way to buck the system and find their way,” says American Experience executive producer Mark Samels. “I think Walt Disney really saw himself that way.”

When Scary Things HappenSometimes scary things happen. Hurricanes, tornadoes, thunder-storms…Things that can leave kids scared, confused and feeling unsafe. In honor of National Preparedness Month, PBS KIDS is sending some friends to help.
After a big storm hits the Neigh-borhood, Daniel and his friends are a little frightened at first, but the grownups have a plan to keep everyone safe. After the storm has passed, the damage is scary to see. But everyone is safe and there are helpers everywhere, coming together to fix the Neighborhood. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood “A Storm in the Neighborhood/After the Neighborhood Storm” premieres Sept. 8 at 8 a.m.
Over in Elwood City, a powerful hur-ricane affects everyone. Muffy must relocate to a shelter. Ladonna’s dad is called away to help with disaster relief. Arthur struggles to reunite lost pets and owners. And Brain seeks the help of a therapist. Through it all, they realize the importance of family, friendship and the compassion of oth-ers in times of crisis. Arthur “Shelter from the Storm” premieres Sept. 8 at 5:30 a.m. and again 3 p.m.
These episodes will be supported by parent and teacher resources designed to help children cope with unexpected events. Look for them online at wtvp.org and our station Facebook page.

How do you get to Sesame Street? You may have read media reports about Sesame Workshop’s new distribution agreement with HBO that left you wondering how our kids will get to Sesame Street. The answer remains as it has been since 1971: By tuning in to WTVP. Sesame Street will continue to air on PBS stations as part of the PBS KIDS service, building on a 45-year history.Sesame Workshop is a separate, independent organization. Their new partner-ship does not change the fundamental role PBS and WTVP play in the lives of families. The PBS KIDS service is comprised of more than a dozen series that have been developed with the needs of today’s children in mind, in academic areas as well as collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity, which research has shown are increasingly important skills in the 21st-century classroom and workplace.Beloved characters fromour many popular seriesare helping boys and girls, espe-cially at-risk children, build the fundamental skills they need, whether they receive our content through television, digital platforms or in school.
That’s why we are so intensively focused on building out PBS KIDS series and properties that truly make a difference in children’s lives— especially children who may not have books, computers, broadband or cable in their homes, but do have access to a television. Series such as our most-watched by
2-5 year olds: Curious George, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Wild Kratts, Dinosaur Train and Peg + Cat. Each of these programs is a powerful part of PBS KIDS’ innovative, educational media service. And as we keep old friends, we also welcome new ones. Watch for Nature Cat and Ready Jet Go! launching later this year.Welcome and thank you to all our members who joined, renewed and made additional gifts during the August drive. We truly appreciate your support.

Bake-Offs & AntiquesWe’re stirring up your Monday nights! Instead of a double dose of Antiques Roadshow, we are starting your evening with a new season of the Great British Baking Show. Combining the thrill of competition and the warmth of real people, the series serves up light hearted fun and a cast you can really care about.
This year, the tent welcomes a baker’s dozen to the battle to be named the U.K.’s best amateur baker. Hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins coax the competitors through their Signature, Technical and Showstopper challeng-es, under the scrutiny of judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. With 13 bakers — from space engineer to stu-dent, teacher to dentist, psychologist to carpenter — Mary and Paul may decide at any time to banish not one but two bakers. After 10 weeks of whisking, crimping and piping, only one can emerge victorious. Season 2 of the Great British Baking Show airs Mondays at 7 p.m. beginning Sep. 7. The programs encore the following Saturdays at 1 and 8 p.m. on WTVP Create 47.3
Roadshow fans need not despair! An-tiques Roadshow continues Mondays at 8 p.m. with encores on Sundays at 6 p.m. Better yet, new episodes begin Sep. 28.

The Civil War RestoredWhen The Civil War premiered in 1990, it set a record for the highest rated PBS series broadcast—a record which stands today. It quickly became the standard for historic documen-taries, and made its filmmaker, Ken Burns, a household name.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of this landmark, award-winning film, The Civil War returns to PBS over five consecutive nights, Sep. 7-11 beginning at 8 p.m. each night. Ready for a new generation, the series is newly restored so viewers can finally experience it as the filmmakers truly envisioned it.
Over the course of two months, 50,000 feet of the original 16mm film negative, which is preserved at the George Eastman House, was scanned frame by frame at 4K (4096 x 2160 pixels, the resolution used for Ultra High Definition). The standard definition 1990 broadcast was taken from a duplicate of the original negative, resulting in a loss of quality. This is the first time the film will be seen with the exact same fidelity and framing as the negative that Burns and his co-cinematographers Allen Moore and Buddy Squires shot over 25 years ago.
“I’m beyond excited,” said Ken Burns. “For the first time, viewers will see what I saw when I looked through the lens of my camera. It is truly remarkable.”

Fun with FoodJoin Emmy-Award winner Phil Rosenthal on his off-beat and often hilarious culinary adventures as he explores all kinds of food and cultures—expanding his tastes and his horizons—in I’ll Have What Phil’s Having.
This new six-part series follows Rosenthal, creator of the TV hit “Everybody Loves Raymond” and one of Hollywood’s funniest pro-ducers, as he explores culinary cap-itals of the world, visiting artisans, markets, vineyards, and farmers, trying the special treats and unusual ingredients each community has to offer. Viewers travel with him from Hong Kong to Barcelona, from Par-is to Tokyo, and from a three-star Michelin restaurant in an Italian palazzo to a Los Angeles bakery training former gang members. Along the way, he entertains the audience while making connections all over the world.
Rosenthal is a food enthusiast, but as he was growing up, he was not exposed to any adventurous eating. “My mother was not a fantastic cook,” he says. “Our oven had a set-ting for ‘shoe.’ But I’ve always loved family, food, travel, and humor. That’s how I connect with people. I’m not your typical adventurer. So, I’m hoping folks will look at a nebbish like me exploring the world and trying new things and say, ‘If that guy can go outside, maybe I can, too.’”
Join the fun Mondays at 9 p.m. beginning Sep. 28. Episodes encore Saturdays at 4 p.m.

In the Local Spotlight Illinois AdventureIn its heyday, Galena had a population greater than Chicago. It was the home of a future United States President and nine of its residents rose to the rank of General during the Civil War. But technology would be the undoing of this area’s economy. Discover the rich history of Galena in an all-new Illinois Adventure premiering Sep. 3 at 8 p.m. Host Jim Wilhelm takes viewers through the Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society and Museum to explore the the town’s boomtown beginnings as a hotbed of lead mining; learn about its Civil War connections, meet some of its famous sons—including General Grant, national hero and future President, and uncover its surprising artistic history. The program also features side trips to the Caterpillar Visitors Center in Peoria, and an often overlooked museum in Springfield, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Foyle’s War—Back on the CaseThe acclaimed detective series returns with more mysteries set in the uncertain days at the beginning of the Cold War. In 1946 London, former DCS Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) now employs his unerring investigative skills on behalf of MI5, assisted by his ever-faithful driver, Sam Wainwright (Honeysuckle Weeks). In “High Castle”, a translator for the Nuremberg trials is killed, leading Foyle into the world of international oil politics and corrupt Nazi businessmen. In “Trespass”, the son of a prominent Jewish man is assaulted as a right-wing manifesto inflames anti-Semitic tensions. And in “Elise”, after an assassination attempt on Hilda Pierce, Foyle examines her SOE activities during the war and rumors of a traitor. Foyle’s War, Series 8 airs Thursdays, Sept. 17-Oct. 1 at 9 p.m.
American MastersAmerican Masters, the award-winning biography series, explores the lives and cre-ative journeys of America’s most enduring artistic and cultural giants. With insight and originality, the series illuminates the extraordinary mosaic of our nation’s landscape, heritage and traditions. The 29th season kicks off Fridays at 8 p.m. on Sept. 4 with the story of Althea Gibson who emerged as the unlikely queen of the segregated tennis world of the 1950s. On Sep. 18, discover the life and work of pho-tographer Pedro E. Guerrero, a collabora-tor of Frank Lloyd Wright. And on Sep. 25, meet 15 women who have created and defined contemporary American culture in The Women’s List, the newest chapter of filmmaker/photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ List film series (The Boomer List, The Black List, The Latino List, The Out List). This documentary features intimate interviews with Madeleine Albright, Gloria Allred, Laurie Anderson, Sara Blakely, Margaret Cho, Edie Falco, Elizabeth Holmes, Betsey Johnson, Alicia Keys, Aimee Mullins, Nancy Pelosi, Rosie Perez, Shonda Rhimes, Wendy Williams and Nia Wordlaw.
In Their Own WordsSave your Tuesdays for a series that profiles key figures in history by using their most memorable quotes to frame their life stories. On Sep. 1 at 8 p.m., follow Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable life, from her youth to her uncle’s abdication, her
father’s coronation as King George VI, her experience during World War II, her sudden ascension to the throne and her eventful reign of more than 60 years. On Sep. 8 at 7 p.m., follow boxer Muhammad Ali’s path from a gym in Louisville to boxing successes, conversion to Islam, opposition to the draft, exile from the ring, comeback fights, Parkinson’s disease and his inspirational re-emer-gence at the Atlanta Olympics. And on Sep. 15 at 7 p.m., follow Jim Henson’s career, from his early television work with the Muppets in the 1950s to his commercial work and network appearances, his breakthrough with Sesame Street and “The Muppet Show,” his fantasy films and his sudden death in 1990.
Gorongosa RebirthGorongosa National Park in Mozambique is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife restoration stories, living proof that nature can recover from near collapse, so long as humans pro-tect it and help it to heal. In Gorongosa Park: Rebirth of Paradise, airing Tuesdays, Sep. 22-Oct. 6, 7-9 p.m., viewers will join Emmy-winning filmmaker Bob Poole on an incredible adventure exploring Gorongosa, as “rewilding” efforts are made to restore populations of magnificent creatures after a civil war nearly destroyed the park.
Poole is joined in the effort by specialists who include his sister, renowned elephant researcher Joyce Poole, philanthropist Greg Carr, and renowned scientist and conser-vationist Edward O. Wilson. Together they explore Gorongosa’s most remote areas and make new scientific discoveries while telling dramatic stories of war-traumatized elephants who charge humans on sight, lions that are fighting dynastic battles as well as poachers’ snares, and tiny yet epic struggles in the insect world that affect the entire ecology. Every creature plays a part in the rebirth of this complex ecosystem.
Your family can enjoy a sneak peek of the series as PBS offers a Preview Week across all streaming platforms, Sep. 16-22. See pbs.org/anywhere for more information. Take a closer look at the captivating stories of Gorongosa by going beyond the broadcast at pbs.org/gorongosa.
Board of Directors MeetingThe Board of Directors of the Illinois Valley Public Telecommunications Corporation (IVPTC), the governing body of WTVP, will meet on Tuesday, Sep. 15 at 4 p.m. in the WTVP Studio. The meeting is open to the public.
